Cylinder misfire seems cured
So,
It looks like it was my transmission causing the misfires. I brought the car out for a hundred miles today and tried to reproduce the problem and couldn't. 2nd gear at steady 6.5k is fine, 3rd at steady 6.5k is fine. Touch wood anyway.
Shame I had the lifters replaced for 4.5k last October to fix this...

Billy, I hate to say this but you seem to have been the buyer of the worst 996 ever built. I do not know anyone with a 996, and I know a few, who has had the problems you have had.

Yep
It's nice to be special
Here's a list of whats failed on the car since I got it in 2003 with when it happened.
New radio because plastic on buttons was peeling, normal cost 500
New front left radiator hoses (35k miles) normal cost 500
New lifters (38k) normal cost 4.9k. For misfire problem. Didn't fix it.
New DME (38k) normal cost 2k
New oxygen sensor (41k miles) normal cost 475
New transmission (41.5k miles) normal cost 9.5k. Seems to have fixed misfires for now.
New brake rotors (41.5k) normal cost 640 dollars plus install
Front differential fluid change (41.5k) 250
And I baby the car...
