My favorite is the Penske story running the Sunoco Camaros. The number 5 (think) chassis was faster than the 6 chassis. They go out and qualify number 5 on pole, come into the pits, make the 5 a 6 and qualify the number "6" car on the front row beside 5.

They never checked the chassis id's in the day. Between that and the acid dipped bodies, he was one of the best....

that we know of.....

There was no better, at least in terms of stories told, than Smokey. His 8/10th's Chevelle was the best of all times.

Agree, ole Smokey Yunick knew all the tricks. Got his book at Xmas several years ago a great read for all gearheads.

Also Norbert Singer the mad scientist at Porsche Motorsport gets an honorable mention for his "interpretation" of the rules set forth by every sanctioning body infuriating the French who somehow seem to run everything across the pond. He was also an expert on finding "loopholes" that others didn't.

In the early 80's I had the thrill of having a 1 on 1 with Smokey where we discussed 4V/cyl vs. 2V and a few other things we were going to try with my BOTT 'cycle. He was truly a "blue collar intellectual" and very easy to talk to.

How about Smokey's "clutch cooling" method. Attach fins to the pressure plate, then route the engine's intake through the bellhousing. I'm sure it cooled the clutch, but the boosted intake pressure was a nioce side effect.

No way was this really a true story?

Smokey stories often seem unbelievable but all are true. To eliminate the parasitic load of a charging system, he once rigged a propeller (someone else's term) driven generator in the grill. It was shortly deemed illegal.
