That is just an average. I use up one set and am about 1/2 way thru another set every summer, so that's about 6 tires a season.

Do you notice tires going bad sitting around then? I've heard that R tires harden up over time.

I do store them properly over the winter. Reduce air to about 10 psi, bag and store inside in dark closet. For my ham-fisted level of driving, they seem to work o.k. in the spring.

A good friend of mine got a set of these Hankooks in a 275/40/17 for his Mustang and has 2 DE weekends on them. They are wearing well and still have some tread pattern on them. He didn't shave them so that tells me they still have more than 50% rubber on them. They grip very well and seem to be similar to other DOT-Rs. Having no back to back or lap time comparison data, take this for what it's worth. If they were avaialble in my size, I would definately buy them. I have used RA1s on my car in the past.

I have no experience with Nitto tires and Hankooks seem to be popular with AX'ers. The Toyo RA1 and the Kumho 710 have been mentioned and I am happy with my Toyo's, even though I run Hoosiers mostly. The upside of the RA1 is tire life, they last to the point of being tossed because they have heat cycled out but still have usuable thread. The Kumho 710 is a favorite of some of my friends who swear the grip is like a Hoosier. Don't know about longevity though.

James how many track days do you usually do?

Usually 4-6 in the past, but this comming summer I'm pushing for 8 (2-3 day) weekends, plus increasing the autocross event # from 2-4 to 6-8. This may increase my tire usage to 2 full sets a summer instead of having half tread left at the end.

the NT-01 is reportedly slightly quicker than the RA1, but not quite as good longevity wise

the Hankooks I don't have much comparison opinions on... they do seem to be pretty long-lasting tho

the V710 will outrun both, and likely even stuff like the Hoosier Rs, but you will go through them fairly quickly from what I've seen around the paddock

I use the RA1 and love em...

James I'd venture you'd get a full season out of a set of Toyo RA1's with your schedule.

I ran the Avon Tech R last season and got very good wear out of them. I had them heat cycled for an extra $15. I ran them on a '03 Mustang Cobra rag top. With me in it it weight 4020 and was nose heavy pig. I did about 4 HPDE on them and they still have more life. My camber was -1.5 on the front and
-1.0 on the rear. the reason I included the camber is because a friend of mine running the stock camber setting has corded his tire which is the same make.
