CMP Review
(Repost due to server migration)
WOW I love this track !!!
It's been two years, almost to the day, since I've been to Carolina Motorsports Park... a track with a special place in my heart. It was my first... and like everyone's first, one you'll never forget.
This particular event started out as a half-dozen guys trying to rent the track for the day to have some fun. Well... then I got wind of it. When I realized it was scheduled for the Monday after our Rockingham event, I knew I was going to be there. We ended up with over 30 cars... lots of P-cars (the guy who started it is a salesman at Hendrick Porsche in Charlotte), a few Z cars, two or three Corvettes, and LOTS of BMW's. I personally 'persuaded' about 16 people to sign up (only 12 showed though).
Anyway... weather could not have been better - bright sunshine, light breeze, low to mid 60's. South Carolina in Novemeber has always been nice, this weekend was no exception.
Format was this: Parade/recon laps for about 20 minutes to start, the track went hot around 9:30... lunch was at noon, track was hot again at 1:00 until they shut down (I left around 4:00, as did most people who had a 3+ hour drive home.)
After the recon laps, I knew I was going to have a good time. The line came back to me pretty quick, and I new in my new ride, with its 4:10 LSD I'd enjoy the 'autocross' section of the track much more than in my Z with its tall gears and smaller displacement. I may even have to revise my turn-by-turn on the wiki page after driving it in the new car LOL.
Everyone there behaved... with the low number of cars traffic was really a non-issue. Even the guys who'd never been there before picked up the pace relatively quickly (after riding with those of us who had of course.) Hell... I even tried my hand at some impromtu instructing for one of the Corvette guys that came down from Rockingham with us. We were only out for a few laps... I don't think it will be something I'll try to get into anytime soon LOL. I'd be much better in classroom I think
At any rate, everyone there was very nice and seemed to have a really good time. It was my first time running a true open track/lapping day. Passing was limited to the four main straights for everyone. No incidents while I was there, although there were a few spins from people trying to chase or stay ahead of their friends. Only major thing we had happen was an Outlaw car that was there threw a rod out of its engine block, pulled off on the grass and promptly caught it on fire. His day was done pretty quickly.
I'll try to get pics on the NEW Trackpedia photo garage soon (Thats for you Billy)

Sounds like you had an awesome time man! Only wish I could have been there as well. Once again sorry about killing your threads in the move of the server. Here are some of the pics you posted off the old server.

No Sand Dune???
Cool, sounds like a good time was had by all except the Outlaw driver. So Stack open track works well doesn't it? Did you have any restrictions on run groups? Think you can get an open track event at VIR (drool cup attached)?
John's comment about the money shot was dead on. The Z with The Rock billboard was framed perfectly.

The way this event was... if it had gotten to the 40 or more car level, I think we would have had to do a cups/saucers kind-of thing. But as it was, not there were no restrictions. You could come and go as you pleased. Which was very nice.

Lets just say this: after this past weekend there are definitely some wheels turning If it were to happen it would almost certainly have to be on a Monday due to the cost of renting VIR and availability.
(BTW John... the reboot worked!! Thanks!)

Keep us posted. VIR, Mosport and LCMT are all tracks I need to revisit. Now are you sure that there were no sand dunes or other spectacular offs you like to tell us about? Feel free to unburden yourself.

OK... I've tried TWICE to post a recap of the Rock... the 1st time, you moved the server on me... the second time, my cat walked across my laptop as I was ALMOST done and hit the power button
So... I'll try again tomorrow... in the meantime... here's a couple action shots of me at CMP:
And yes... I used the Trackpedia photo gallery this time!!
