No sim will ever come close to the pucker factor of on track though. Force Feedback is improving. But until something cracks me up side the head when I roll the car or better yet, empties my bank account when I smack the wall. It will have it's limitations.
ECCI, based in the Twin Cities has the best wheel and pedal I have ever felt BTW.

Nice rig. Do you use the ECCI wheel and pedals? If so, I would love to give them a try as I have considered buying them in the past.

Damn you all are making me drain my bank account this winter. I really want to build a setup like the one in the video as it looks really REALLY damn real which would be really fun to play with!
On to other questions what type of hardware are you running for your computer? Most of you in dual core mode with the AMD chips? Video card?

Right now, Intel Core 2 Duo is way faster than AMD's best, and comparable in price as well. Core 2 Duo also overclocks better and runs cooler. AMD has catching up to do.

Keyboard controls were so-so on rFactor, it's probably just fine with a wheel.

in keeping with the original topic...
What I get out of using driving sim software:
- Figuring out lines around different types of corner combinations. Sometimes, what appears to be a good line actually isn't. And the good racing sims seem very accurate as to the correct line.
- Threshold braking
- Vehicle settings, although I actually have no idea how accurate they are.

Check out this string... http://www.trackpedia.com/forums/sho...1298#post11298
rFactor from a sim standpoint is getting better and better. The native tracks are graphically the best. Now they have MOTEC so you can do full analysis if you are so inclined. The online net code is excellent so we can race side by side for many laps.
We are running a league with the 79 Grand Prix mod and it is working well. We can adjust weight on drivers to even out the field so if you have one fast guy, he gets an extra 120 pounds etc.... http://groups.msn.com/slipstreamracing
Back on topic.
Running nose to tail albeit a sim is great help. I notice when on the real track that too many times I get so intent on "running down" the next guy ahead of me that I start missing critical points, like brake points etc...Running online races with other "real" competitors forces your concentration to stick to the track not just following the other guy.
You'd be surprised how it helps you reaction speeds also. I know coming out of T3, I reacted much better just out of instinct probably saving a couple spins.
Love to have more of you out there. We can support up to 40 drivers online. And it's free, most fun you can have in the winter, with your clothes on, for no money... PM me and I can help get you set up.

I don't have the ECCI wheel/pedals but a buddy in Minnetonka does. If you ever want to try them, we can pop over to his place and check them out.
He's a fellow Nordsterner, runs the timing and scoring for the club, Ed Tripet...

A .wmv file of a hot lap at Istanbul. Download takes a while but gives you a good idea of what the 79 mod feels like. With no traction control these this will punish you anytime you think you can just mash the throttle. It will snap oversteer like a b@#ch.
