Default What to learn on sims

I was paging through Ross Bentley's Speed Secrets #2 and noticed that he mentions games/sims....

Here's a snip of what he thinks about them....

1 - great for improving the ability to focus concentration for a period of time

2 - develop good control of the wheel

3 - they lack any kinesthetic feedback

I would add:

4 - Helps you learn the track! Doing probably a few hundred laps of RA in Forza Motorsport before going there in person for the first time last weekend definitely helped me go faster, sooner because I knew exactly what to expect, especially turn 5 (semi-blind due to downhill drop in braking zone) and turn 6 (very blind, due to uphill area before turn).

#4 is true but he mentions that learning to drive a F1 car in a sim on a track you'll never drive on may not help you other than 1 & 2.

My own experience with sims has been limited to a short time with NASCAR 2003 with stuff to add the long track of WGI and some sports cars and set-up.

I am a firm believer in sims. I use them for all of the reasons listed above and agree with Ross's feedback comment, but none the less, they provide cheap seat time. If anyone has $30K or so laying around, this may help with the feedback portion ( http://www.force-dynamics.com check out the videos) The best sim that I have tried from a realism standpoint is netKar Pro however they don't have any real tracks...yet.

I have thought about buying a couple/few of them and opening up a sim center in the Twin Cities.

The aircraft sim place in the mall of america seems to do well. As does the nascar sim, and those things are crap. Would be pretty sick to get a few of those together and run a proper race sim place.

It does look pretty wicked. It's round with the price of houses lately anyway, a motorsports room, the new must have in a 8000 sqft house...
