Instructor's got it right. Use the same gauge all the time. I've done side-by-side comparisons between my track-use Longacre and two different Accutires and found that they read significantly differently. But all that really matters is repeatability. And, besides, while a tire pressure gauge will tell you how much air is in the tires, it won't actually tell you if that's the right amount of air. That's an empirical question that only the seat-of-your-pants and and a pyrometer will answer...
