View Full Version : WMC BMWCCA Open Passing

Was at an HPDE last weekend that allowed RG1 drivers that attended a "passing clinic" to pass anywhere after a point-by. Not too many examples in the video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFJn20ci2jk), but there are some there. Everyone handled it well, left plenty of room and was courteous.

waiting to process still
Open Passing from my understanding means you can pass with or without a point... its just one notch more nerve-racking sometimes

Maybe "passing in the corners" is more like it. The original plan was to have real open passing, but they're trying to test it out, so they went with the point-by required for now.

I much prefer that, especially after being chopped by a 944 Turbo between 11 and 12 at Road Atlanta and being surprised by a DSR thingy in turn 4 at Road Atlanta under caution.
I still point even in these open passing TT sessions, its habit for me now...
its a big jump up for most people in the amt of concentration and "vision" it takes to pass/be passed mid-corner. Congrats on making that jump successfully :)

Bravo Kevin, Some good smooth driving by you and it looked like everyone else had their situational awareness up and running also. Question anything left on the RA1's :) Last time I saw them they were pretty close to Hoosiers.
ps. Where's my fire bottle and BK mount? :)

I think I can still wring something out of the Hoosiers...there are still 4 grooves in them, which I think means that they have >3.5/32" left. They are cupped something awful though. Thanks for the kind words. I am picking up more and more everytime I go to NHIS now that I sort of know where the track goes. Vision is still expanding. The classroom instructor Ed Valpey from WMC was really interesting, he was presenting stuff to the RG1 students that I hadn't thought about before. Not taking anything away from Fred, he's awesome, but it was nice to have a different perspective.
Unfortunately, I won the HPDE last weekend so instead of champagne I had to hose down the podium girls with the contents of your extinguisher.
Just kiddin, it's ready to give back at any time.
Looks like this weekend is a no-go, as well . There might still be a chance for Sunday...
